10704 Oviatt Rd. Honor.Green Cuisine is an expression of Food For Thought’s philosophy. It is our effort to bring more awareness to the benefit of local food and sustainable business practices. Visitors can sample the best products of local food and beverage artisans, tour Food For Thought’s organic farm and green buildings as well as socialize, learn and have fun in a beautiful setting. Children welcome. Zero-waste” event.
As in all things sustainable “zero-waste” is a process, not a destination. The goal is for all the waste generated from the event to be either reusable, recyclable or compostable. Utensils, drinking cups and plastic bags are made from corn and compostable. Plates are also made from non-bleached recycled content and along with the food scraps are added to our onsite composting piles where we compost 100% of our food waste from our food facility along with approximately 7 tons of cardboard every year. This compost is then used on our organic farm and the organic farms of local farmers that grow crops for us. Last year we had over 800 guests eating, drinking and socializing which resulted in less than one ounce of waste. Sponsored by Food For Thought & Benzie County Chamber of Commerce. 231-326-5444

Benzonia Academy Lecture Series at Mills Community House - featuring German Immigration to the U.S.
7pm. Why They Came and How They Succeeded
by Dr. Louis Yock. When looking at census data, the most commonly claimed ancestry in the
United States and the Benzie area is "German." Why did so many Americans'
families leave the Old Country? And what did they find when they got here?
Why isn't St. Boniface's Day celebrated like St. Patrick's Day? From
colonial days until the early 20th century, the causes of German immigration
to the United States are examined, as are the reasons for the ethnic groups
success in the new country. Dr. Yock is the director of the Benzie Area
Historical Museum and was a specialist in 19th century German Immigration
and American Religious History. Sponsored by the Benzie Historical Society. 231-882-5539

Benzonia Academy Lecture Series at Mills Community House - featuring Navigating the Landscape of Assimilation.
7pm.
The Anisnabeg and the Lumber
Industry
by Dr. Bradley J. Gills.
While the state and federal governments were trying to turn the native
peoples into farmers, the native peoples were content to continue their
lifestyle of seasonal occupations. Dr. Gills explains his recent
examinations and discoveries in how the migratory patterns of the area's
native peoples were complemented by the seasonal employment opportunities
offered by the lumber companies and their suppliers and distributors, which
frustrated the governmental agencies' programs of assimilation. Sponsored by the Benzie Historical Society. 231-882-5539
