Description
Benzie’s “Turkey Kings” Focus of November Benzonia Academy Lecture Few people remember the Marshall brothers' enterprise that made them the largest producer of turkeys in the Midwest from 1929 to 1956. This major turkey farm, located in Benzie County and the members of the pioneer Marshall family who operated it, will be the focus of a presentation on Thursday, November 14 at 4:00 p.m. at the Benzie Area Historical Museum. Local historian and Benzie Area Historical Society board member will present and share that Eleanor Roosevelt received a Thanksgiving bird, as did governors, mayors, and even Sophie Tucker. You’ll hear the stories behind this enterprising turkey farm and the family that led its growth for almost three decades. This presentation is part of the Benzonia Academy Lecture Series, held on the second Thursday of each month, and is sponsored by the Benzie Area Historical Society. The Benzie Area Historical Museum is located at 6941 Traverse Avenue, Benzonia. Admission is by a suggested donation of $5. For more information, contact the Benzie Area Historical Society at 231.882.5539 or go to their website www.benziemuseum.org.
